Things To Know About Central Locking System

Introduction

In India, cars have been equipped with features like central locking for a number of decades. The main difference between then and now is that, originally, it was a luxury feature, whereas today, it can be found in practically any automobile, from low-cost hatchbacks to high-end SUVs. Read on to know more about it.

Purpose and benefit of Central Locking System

The sole purpose of vehicle central locking, which can be activated by remote control or when the driver’s door locks, is to simultaneously lock or unlock all the car’s doors. It is a feature that provides convenience in addition to safety and security.

It contributes to improving the safety and security of the vehicle by alerting the driver with warning lights shown at parts like the speedometer if the car door is open. This is made possible by modern, highly-developed computer systems that are integrated into the central locking mechanism.

In terms of security, it prevents automobile theft using an alarm that is connected to a centralized car lock system, which further lowers the likelihood of theft.

Additionally, it serves as a handy function that allows the driver to control all of the car’s door locks, or when the driver is outside the vehicle, he or she can lock or unlock all of the doors with the touch of a button on the key fob.

Working on a Central Locking System

Key codes and radio waves provide the foundation of central locking. In simple words, the car key functions as a transmitter, and the vehicle acts as a receiver. The vehicle would obey any instructions given by the key, and will only comply with the command if the codes of the receiver and transmitter are the same.

Additionally, the immobilizer activates if the automobile is locked using the key. The immobilizer is a safety feature in engines that disables the engine on the transmitter’s or key’s order, preventing the automobile from being stolen.

Older vehicles had a different mechanism that was a little more primitive than the one we currently use, whereas most recent car models feature a power-operated central locking apparatus.

Components of a Central Locking System

There are four primary components of a Central Locking System

  1. Actuator

An actuator uses a combination of pistons and gears to lower the shaft attached to the door lock. To open the lock, an extended cable or shaft is used. As a result, it becomes one of the most important components of a car’s overall lock system.

  1. Transponder

The transponder is installed inside the key bow. For the engine immobilizer to know when to start or stop, the transponder reads and matches codes. If the vehicle has keyless entry, the immobilizer reads the transponder code as soon as the key approaches the vehicle, at which point the engine roars to life.

  1. Key Fob

A key fob is a remote control that permits keyless access to an automobile. It is also in charge of opening other automotive components like the trunk or turning on the lights in addition to locking and unlocking a car. Simply put, it’s a convenience function that lets the user lock or unlocks the automobile with a single button press without being physically present next to the vehicle. The typical range of a remote key is fifteen meters in proximity to the vehicle.

  1. Start/Stop button

Another useful component that almost removes the need for a key is the start/stop button. It is a button that is located close to the steering wheel and activates the ignition when pressed. It has the same characteristics as a typical key.

Conclusion

The Central Locking System is an extremely useful feature present in automobiles. It ensures both safety and convenience while using a vehicle. While most automobiles in the market already come equipped with the system, if it’s absent, it is advisable to get its installation done so that you can drive your car in a secure manner.
